Because You Loved Me
Chapter 2: I Lost My Faith, You Gave it Back to Me

"There was a time Logan helped me." Kurt Wagner, otherwise known as Nightcrawler, said when reaction to Rogue's story died down, "With all that happens and has happened in our lives; with all the sacrifices and losses we have experienced, I began to doubt my faith.

"I began to ask myself 'If Christ is real, how can He allow such atrocities? Surely His suffering was enough!' Then I began to see the falsehood of those who are bigoted against mutants and want to pervert the message of the gospel for their own ends. Most of them ascribe to being Christian, yet turn murderous at the mention of a mutant."

Kurt stopped to regain his composure. This was still a sore point with him. He calmed himself and started anew.

"Logan must have noticed I wasn't going to church at this time. One Sunday he sought me out. We talked for awhile and he finally said,

"'Elf, ya can't give up on God.'

"'Why not?' I asked.

"'It ain't in ya. Yer one of the most well adjusted mutants I've ever met. Yer faith keeps ya grounded.'

"'But I now find my faith empty.' I replied to him. He put a comforting hand on my shoulder and said,

"'It ain't yer faith failin', it's the people in it. Yer faith has always preached tolerance an' love. All true Christians are that way. Just 'cause a few whackos are tryin' ta distort it ta fit their agendas don't take away from the purity of the message.'

"I thought about what he said. It made sense, and that was all we'd ever said about the subject. After that I went back to church and started doing even more research on Catholic positions."

"What did you find, mon ami?" Remy asked.

"Just what Logan had said; the Church teaches tolerance and love. Those who say otherwise simply pervert the true message. Ironic, isn't it, that Logan who has no faith, helped me to reconcile myself with mine?"

"But that's always been the way Logan's worked." Jean piped up for the first time, "Almost as if he were psychic too." She looked around at the assembled group, "He appeared so harsh and rough, yet could see what we needed before we knew we needed it. He usually didn't interfere, but always offered help if it was needed."

"It was his way of expressing his love for us." Professor Xavier said, "We, his family."
