Chapter Sixteen - Grrrrrrr

Ari's padded feet landed softly, silently onto the pitch-black floor of Logan's mind. Well, at least I made it this far... that's gotta' be a good thing. She sniffed the air for a few seconds, whew! ... she caught his scent. I was hoping I'd be able to smell him. That makes two... let's hope this keeps up. She swallowed and licked her muzzle. She knew which direction to head, but she was unsure what she was up against. This was definitely new territory... she stuck out her lip to blow the hair out of her eyes and then giggled... force of habit. She braced herself for anything and took off, loping in the direction of Logan's scent.

She moved along at a steady pace... her eyes not bothered at all by the darkness. They were made for it, and for that she was thankful. Soon enough, she saw light ahead. Thoughts raced through her mind. She was in a huge hurry to find Logan, and she decided that anything she might see in his mind were going to be his memories... his dreams... his thoughts. It was best if she just found him, and then worried about the rest later. She closed her eyes and started running... fast, following his scent.

She found that it was actually easier to smell him with her eyes closed... it wasn't like she was going to run into anything... there was nothing material here to run into. Nothing was as it seemed here. She ran along eagerly, from his scent she could tell that he was still alive. She was fairly confident that she could "convince" him to come with her.... and her instincts were telling her that he was going to recover from the virus. She was full of hope, and more than eager to see him. As she ran, following the scent she tried to form a plan... to figure out exactly what she was going to do when she found him. If he had truly given up and wanted to die, it was a safe bet that he was going to be mad. Mad that she had come looking for him. Well, she could handle mad... she wasn't afraid of Logan... awake or unconscious. She chuckled. He really didn't know her at all. She thought back on all of the things that had happened in the short time that they had been together. She had shown him a little bit of her true nature when she yelled at him about the wolf pup... she chuckled again... Hell ! He'd have seen a lot more than that if I hadn't been slathered with drool and about to faint just from standing next to him. She felt a shiver run through her body... weird... it made all of her fur stand on end. She wondered how she would respond in his presence, now ... would he have the same effect? She couldn't wait to see.... to feel her desire for him through this body.

Ari had never been attracted to normal men. Oh, she had met a few who made decent friends, and there were a few volunteers that she respected a lot... but Logan had blown her mind! It had been so unexpected.

Ari had always known she was different... very different. Children had naturally hated and feared her, adults had just thought she was a strange child. The only people who ever liked her were " animal" people... people who respected and loved animals. To them she was like a guru... the 'go to' girl. They came to her with questions, wanting to know more about the way animals felt, how they communicated with each other... they thought she knew so much from years of working with them, which, of course, didn't hurt. If they only knew.... if they only knew that she knew so much about them ... because she was one. She swallowed, still getting used to the idea. She hadn't even known herself, until yesterday. She started figuring it out when she saw Logan's claws... and when she saw him shake the snow off. She had known immediately that they were alike... when she first caught his scent. She wondered what he had thought when he caught her scent... if he had had a similar reaction. Then it had all become so clear to her today, talking with the Professor. It was like she received the last dozen or so missing pieces to complete the huge puzzle she had been working on all her life. She was a mutant... and she was part animal. She had been shocked and upset at first, but then she was relieved. Everything made sense. If she hadn't been so worried about losing Logan, she figured she probably would have run howling through the halls.

Something caught her attention, something had changed. The scent was very strong now, different, and she opened her eyes to find herself in a strange, colorful and dark place... in a mass of swirling red and yellow clouds. The smell was strong here... very wild... very animal. She raised her nose into the air and breathed it in deeply. Grrrrrr She was the animal part of Logan's mind... and she wished she could stay here with him forever. It was wonderful.... intoxicating.

Suddenly, she noticed a low, droning sound that had been nagging her ... like a buzzing fly in her ears. She concentrated hard, cocking her head to one side, straining her ears to hear it. It was a voice... her voice... repeating phrases... her heart froze... Shit! She lifted her head and howled, long and high. I'm coming, Logan. She sniffed again and ran on in the direction of his scent.

Logan lifted his head, and then dropped it again. He thought he had heard something... something different than the constant droning, soothing sound of "her" voice... repeating the same words over and over. He had been lying here for the past few minutes listening to it... allowing it to soothe his pain, and ease his suffering. It was telling him to fall asleep, and he was just about there. It felt so good to let go... to not have to fight anymore. He sighed. He had been fighting for far too long for any man. ..... mmm.... This was definitely easier than fighting...

Ari dropped her nose to the ground, sniffing and concentrating... she was very close. She picked up speed, ran a few more yards, and looked up. When she saw him, her heart leapt and she skidded to a halt. He was lying on the ground a few yards in front of her. Oh, my God... her heart pounded madly, and she licked her muzzle with her long red tongue. She hadn't expected this. He was lying, stretched out, his head on his legs, nose on his paws...He was the most beautiful wolf she had ever seen! He was huge and black as night.. with a long, wavy... luxurious coat. Her body was quivering with anticipation, she wanted his scent... she wanted to... Focus, Ari! She lifted her nose and sniffed softly, head bobbing, eyes closed. He was sleeping. She wanted to stand there, unnoticed, and look at him, drink in every inch of him... but the damn voice was repeating those words to him, she had no choice but to wake him... now.

"Logan...... Logan..." she called softly. She was surprised at her voice. It felt strange coming out, and it was beautiful. Deep, throaty... soft as velvet, with just a hint of a growl. Mmm she liked it. She took a few steps closer, "Logan... wake up."

Logan lifted his head, blinking and squinting his beautiful dark green eyes to see her. He was pretty far gone, and it took a long time for him to focus. What the Hell? What he saw before him was a beautiful grey and brown wolf, with golden yellow eyes. He turned his head to the side and eyed her suspiciously. He knew wolves didn't talk, and she didn't look the slightest bit afraid of him... it was just his mind playing tricks on him. He sighed and dropped his head back down onto his paws.

Hmpf ! So much for love at first sight! Ari was a little disappointed with his apparent lack of interest in her. "Logan, I want you to get up and come with me." He didn't move a muscle. He was completely ignoring her... and the voice kept repeating. She was beginning to get angry. " Logan! " she said loudly.

He lifted his head again. " Leave me alone," he said, in a deep, sensual, masculine voice... it was even more gruff than usual... which was saying a lot, for Logan. " No, I'm not going to leave you alone! I said I want you to get your sorry ass up and come with me!" Ari wasn't messing around. She had to get him out of here quickly... away from that voice. " Logan, This is your head... make that voice shut up."

Logan's eyes flashed with just a hint of anger. His eyes looked up about him, at the blackness. " I like that voice." He raised his nose and sniffed the air. He could smell her... he felt a tingle of ... something strange... flow through his body. " Who are you... and what the Hell are you doin' in my head?"

Ari smiled. Now we're getting somewhere. " It's me, Logan..." she swallowed. The moment of truth." It's me, ... Ari."

Logan eyed her warily for a moment, and then lifted his head and laughed. The hair on her back bristled with anger and hurt. " What, you're a wolf now?" he asked, sarcastically. His face changed, " You're not real! " he shouted, angrily. His countenance fell. " Now go away and leave me alone, I'm tryin' to sleep." He dropped his head again, and closed his eyes.

" I am real... I came in here to get you... to bring you back."

He didn't move. " Not goin' back." he said matter-of-factly. " Now, shut up, I'm tryin' to concentrate."

She was furious. " Concentrate on what? Dying? Giving in? Oh, that's great! 'You listening to that voice? Is it telling you what to do?" she moved closer to him and spat her words out coldly, " that's MY voice... you idiot! Those words weren't meant for you! "

His memory jarred... it came back to him, he remembered why she had said those things. She had been talking about the wolf pup, before it died. Dammit! He looked up at her angrily... not wanting to lose the comfortable feelings they had given him. " Well, then I'm 'gonna borrow 'em then ... 'cause they work for me, too, Darlin' ." he said just as coldly.

Fear seized her heart, he wanted to die. He had chosen to die. She struggled for the right words to say, what angle to use to convince him to stay. She moved closer, a foot away from him " Logan, you can't die." she said quietly.

" Why, the Hell, not? It's my choice, isn't it?" he demanded.

She swallowed and licked her muzzle. Go for it, Ari. " Because if you die... then... then I don't want to live either." she whispered.

His mouth opened, gaping, none of this was making any sense to him. He stared at the beautiful creature before him in disbelief. He shook his head and cleared his throat, roughly. " Uh, Ari is it? Is that who you're sayin' you are?" She nodded. " Darlin'... have you... taken a good look at yourself lately?" he asked, cynically.

She sighed... she didn't need to look, she knew what he was referring to. " Logan, ... honey....have you taken a good look at... yourself ....lately? " she asked, matching his cynicism, and then some. Logan frowned and looked down. He leapt up in shock, whirling around looking at every part of himself he could see. " What in the Hell is going on here?" he asked furiously. " I've got a damn tail! ... Shit! "

" I'll explain all of that later, I need to get you out of here. " She looked around, the voice had stopped.

" I said I'm not goin' back." He sat down, stubbornly. Ari was exasperated, furious. He was being more difficult than she had ever imagined he would. She knew what her options were, but she didn't want to resort to that unless she had to.

He was regarding her silently, thinking back on the whole crazy conversation. She was so beautiful. His body reacted strangely, chills running through him. " What did you mean... if I die... you don't want to live either?" he asked quietly. Shit! She really wished she hadn't said that. She was still completely unsure how to proceed.

" It doesn't matter, what I meant. I want you to come with me. There are a lot of people waiting for you. A lot of people who love you, I've met them today, they're wonderful people, Logan. Your friends. " she could feel him softening a bit. " You're young... you have your whole life ahead of you. I know this virus has really been hard on you, but you were fighting it, Logan, and now you've just given up... why did you give up Logan?"

He looked up at her, his eyes full of tortured emotion. " You left me... you said you wouldn't leave me... I needed you...I couldn't fight it without you.... alone ," he said quietly. Her heart fell, hard. She groaned and ran close to his side, laying her neck against his. " I'm so sorry,Logan, I had to... the Professor was asking me questions... we were trying to think of ways to help you... I didn't want to leave you...I'm so sorry." she opened her mouth, exposing her beautiful white teeth, and licked him softly on the face. A shudder ran through his body, his hair felt bristly, tingly. He moaned and moved his face closer to her neck. He breathed in her deep, strong scent. It really was her! Different, stronger, wild...but unmistakably her. Memories of her, coming to him in her cabin... kissing him... God!... the way she had kissed him...the memories flooded through him, and with them flames of desire, coursing through this strange body he was in. Ari's body was also reacting strongly to his nearness. She was beginning to feel tired, drugged... she wanted him so badly... she knew that this was dangerous. She needed to get him out of here... she had to convince him to follow her. She cursed herself, Dammit! ... she hadn't wanted it to come down to this.

She lifted her head slowly, running her long red tongue along her muzzle seductively, looking deep into his eyes. Her beautiful tilted yellow eyes were half closed with desire, and when she spoke, her voice was deep and soft with her need for him. " Logan, I need you... I want you.....to come back with me." Logan chose to hear the first part, and ignore the latter, he could feel his strange, new body growing aroused, becoming hard with need. It felt good... really good. He wasn't sure what he should do, but he decided to let his instincts take over... he reached around behind her and touched his nose to the thick mound of hair on the back of her neck, he heard her moan with pleasure as he opened his mouth widely, slowly biting down gently, holding her there. He stood, slowly, carefully next to her... tugging her gently by the back of her neck, willing her to stand. She moaned loudly, "Logan, I... we shouldn't..." He took his mouth away from her neck for a moment..." Please... I want you...." he whispered hoarsely into her ear, his hot breath sending new chills throughout her body. She groaned and looked into his eyes... " If I... If we do... Do you promise you'll come back with me? " He closed his eyes, trying to calm his aching body, "Yes," he said opening them, " I promise." He opened his mouth and slowly ran his long tongue smoothly against her face, starting at the tip of her nose, across up over her forehead and over her ears, and down onto the back of her neck again. She growled, low and deep, and stood, tentatively, on shaking legs. Dammit! She couldn't help herself... and he'd promised... He bit down on the back of her neck again, harder this time, unable to control himself...she moaned loudly..... then they were both lost.....
